Planning to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing next month and I want to make sure I am properly prepared. I have heard it is one of the best day hikes in the world but also that the weather can change very quickly. What gear do I actually need? Is it possible to do without a guide? How long does it typically take? And what is the best time of year to go? I am a moderate hiker - I have done full day walks before but nothing at altitude. Any advice from people who have done it recently?
